For a change this weekend we decided to order some really dreadful films from our film rental service.
We usually try and watch really good ones. Classics, even, in the hope we can find those splendid flicks that make us go, “Indeed, we shall add this to our DVD collection!” And that’s a most splendid moment.
Jack and Jill
So why purposefully choose movies which were critically mauled (as in dissed by the critics)? Well, why not? Some films are just so awful that you can enjoy them.
The remake of The Wicker Man springs to mind—the one with Nic Cage.
Now Mr. Cage is a brilliant actor, but he has been in some really terrible films and his brand of method acting intensity often makes films seem ridiculous.
Yet it’s mildly amusing in its awfulness. So, we thought, let’s see what all the fuss is about and watch some really dreadful movies!
Then, perhaps, we’ll enjoy our favourites even more! So we rented Sex and the City 2 – this film currently has a 15% rating on RottenTomatoes (a film review aggregating site).
This means it’s rubbish. We haven’t watched that yet, but we did just watch Jack and Jill. Read on for our verdict, sir/madame.
Let’s point out it has a 3% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, who state (and this is a verbatim quote):
"Although it features an inexplicably committed performance from Al Pacino, Jack and Jill is impossible to recommend on any level whatsoever".
Pretty damning, non? This didn’t deter the intrepid Professional Moron staff, for we watched it with a sense of awe.
The verdict? Well it’s supposed to be a comedy, but only particularly stupid people will find this amusing.
It’s extremely unfunny, stars the talentless Katie Holmes in cringe-worthy form, and Al Pacino kind of embarrasses himself. Sandler, meanwhile, (he plays both Jack and Jill – the latter in drag) is thoroughly charmless.
So, is it a “so bad it’s good!” film? No, but it’s a “so bad it’s just worth watching just to see how bad it is” movie. So we award the film the lame duck award of vegetable movie ratings – The Vegetable Monster! Watch Punch-Drunk Love instead. Or Uncut Gems.
