Okay, we have a big love for idle games. Jake Holland’s awesome SPACEPLAN (2017) remains the best we’ve played (in our opinion), but here’s an excellent number as well.
Tower Wizard is by solo indie dev Barribob and it launched on Steam in early 2025. It doesn’t cost much (£2.49), yet offers hours of strategic clicking and resource management—all to make that tower go up, up, up, and away. It’s very good!
Incremental Magic and Stuff in Tower Wizard
In this one, it’s your goal to help a cool wizard with a big beard build (and upgrade) his tower. It’s an incremental idle clicker type time of it, meaning you have to click on various in-game items to generate resources.
That begins with The Orb, which you click to create magic. With that magic you can summon beings to click The Orb for you, before going on to build a library to gain knowledge, or source wood (for buildings).
In classic idle click fashion (the madness of Cookie Clicker being a fine example), the game does a lot of the work for you by generating resources to spend. It’s up to you to put your various items to good use for ever-higher numbers.
Here it all is in action.
The main thing with Tower Wizard, as an idle game, is it respects your time. As great as Cookie Clicker is, the thing absorbs your time and demands hundreds of hours of play.
With its £2.49 price tag, you get about 10 hours of play here and its resource management system scales up effortlessly. It’s wonderfully well put together.
It moves fast, too, so you “ascend” your tower and it morphs into an increasingly dramatic structure.
Each time you ascend, achieved through maxing out a certain amount of magic and wood generation, you get a new architectural element to manage (a library, a dragon etc.).
Idle games aren’t for everyone, but if you want a contained arena where you watch numbers go up and up, this type of thing may well be for you. In fact, Tower Wizard is a brilliant introduction to the genre as it’s so gosh darned accessible.
Very much pick-up-and-play, but also complemented by a fabulous pixel art style. Double thumbs up from us! 🧙♂️
