If you like film debate over ’80s and ’90s gems (or so-bad-they’re-good romps) then You Are Good is the podcast for you!
It also helps because You’re Wrong About’s Sarah Marshall (a fabulous human person) co-hosts the show. Anyone used to her super smart intellect and sense of humour can rejoice on that one (we sure bloody do).
Hosted by Alex Steed and Marshall, this is a trip down movie lane with stop off points including mental health, weird plot holes, and why Lake Placid was the best film of the 1990s. Let’s do this|!
Embrace Those Popcorn Movies of Thine Youth in You Are Good
You Are Good’s Lake Placid (1999) episode from June 2024 is what made us swoon for this podcast. We remember the film from when it launched, watched it, and enjoyed its B movie stupidity.
Marshall is quick to point out something a bit odd with the title.
What do you think the name of the lake in this film is? Lake Placid? Nope! It’s called Black Lake, which is not the name of the film. What the hell? It’s one of those weird B movie lapses that makes no sense but is very enjoyable for its absurdity (see Rob Hill’s excellent Bad Movie Bible for more of that).
This is the Lake Placid episode, though, with the whole podcast available on Apple, Spotify… the usuals!
There are many film podcasts out there and we usually tout Kermode & Mayo’s Take as the best one. Certainly for covering the latest releases.
The different with You Are Good is the tangential approach.
It’s more of an open discussion than a critique. It helps if you’re of a certain age (late 30s) when the 1990s provided you with the films to inspire your life. Whether the move was good or bad, that era fuelled a generation with ideas.
One such film? Well, one we saw at the cinema! The glorious, atrocious, pun-filled abomination that was Batman and Robin (1997). It’s notorious for Arnold Schwarzenegger attempting to set the record for the most terrible puns in one film (we did a post on that—see Mr. Freeze awful puns).
There are seemingly forgotten ’80s films, too, such as Three Men and a Baby (1987). Remember that? It starred Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and Michelle Blair (of The Exorcist 1973 fame).
That’s one of the themes of the podcast. And an interesting on it is too.
We covered this on our Jaws 2 (1978) review. At that time in 1978, the film will have been the biggest on the planet. It was a big summer success and made a bunch of money. Yet the young cast in it all disappeared into obscurity after.
You Are Good often flags this up, the nature of momentary smash hit films. Despite their success, they then slide off into the distance never to be heard from again.
Around these discussion Steed and Marshall make jokes, discuss socioeconomic issues of the era, and recall their experiences with each film.
Well worth a listen! We can dig it and if you’re good you can, too.
