Touch Type Tale: Strategic Typing Toward Thy Glory ⌨️

Touch Type Tale the game

The joys of touch typing have never been better realised than in Touch Type Tale (2023). By German indie team Pumpernickel Studio in Münster, it’s available on PC only (Steam, Epic Games etc.).

Whilst this is a strategy game with Medieval themes, there’s also a focus on typing (believe it or not). And as big fans of touch typing as part of an elitist set of the typing community, we heartily support this product.

Slay All Before Thee in Touch Type Tale: Strategic Typing

There are quite a few typing indie games around, but this is the first one we’ve played. It’s a stylish game but also a surprisingly difficult one, with a sharp focus on being able to type proper.

We learned how to touch type began in 2010 and have been intolerably smug about it ever since. Thus, we sauntered into Touch Type Tale and enjoyed our brilliance aplenty.

For other players, though, just brace yourself for lots of the stuff (typing). There’s almost no mouse interaction in the game, you have to go full keyboard warrior mode.

There is a plot around the concept, too, involving using your fingers to construct and arrange armies. All with the goal of defeating no good miscreants and the like. Those blaggards! You can think of it like a strategy game along the Settlers III (1998) line, but it’s total typing. Here’s the stuff in action!

It’s very polished, looks great, has a suitable Medieval soundtrack (we couldn’t find any sample pieces online, sadly), and it’ll actually improve your typing abilities. That is handy in the modern world of work. If you’re trundling along at 40 words a minute you need to improve on that, loser!

However, whilst it’s good fun that does place it more in the educational game genre than anything else. The entertainment element is there, too, but it’s strategy and improving your typing.

If you can’t improve your touch typing than the game may frustrate you. But the whole point is to play it, improve over time, and then start enjoying the experience more.

Now, to add to the excellence here the game features the vocal talents of acting legend Jim Broadbent. Here he is waxing lyrical about his experiences.

It seems entirely random this Oscar-winning actor would attach himself to this project! But there we go, glad to see him on board and he does a fine job.

There’s 5+ hours of gameplay here and that story to unlock, too, but the whole experience is more good fun novelty experience over a 10/10 classic banger.

All we can add is if it intrigues… give it a go.
