Here’s a fabulous podcast we discovered recently (in belated fashion, shame on us). You’re Wrong About is a history podcast, with a big focus on pop culture (often from America).
Hosted by journalist and co-creator Sarah Marshall, it takes very detailed looks into subject matter society is often wrong about. Yeah?
This is a very liberal podcast with a strong feminist, social justice angle. As such, if you’re easily offended by THE WOKE MOB being pleasant and considered on far-reaching subject matter, it’s probably best you avoid listening to this stuff.
You’re Wrong About (but will be happy to learn more in this excellent podcast)
Here’s a taster episode! Changing your mind… not many people do that, eh? The sign of a closed worldview is someone who won’t change their mind.
Obstinacy can be a real blockade to personal growth (and humanity it general). But if you open your mind to new possibilities some fabulous things await.
That’s kind of what You’re Wrong About is all… about.
The series was created by Michael Hobbes and Sarah Marshall, with the former being a journalist for the HuffPost. He also hosted this podcast between 2018 and 2021, although these days it’s Marshall who fronts the content.
Each episode delves into a subject matter, such as moral panics, celebrity incidents, or a famous murder. The show then follows this structure:
- An opening where the host shares common knowledge about a person or event that’s been accepted as correct over time.
- The topic is then thoroughly explored, with considerations on media and public responses alongside the truth behind the issue.
- Myths are debunked and the reality of a situation emerges.
That was the old style, anyway, more recent podcasts from 2023 focus on a guest for the week bringing a story.
Such as podcaster Princess Weekes discussing the US murder mystery case of involving Lizzie Borden (1860-1927) and an open discussion takes place.
Other episodes focus on Amy Winehouse’s troubled life, how awful everyone was to Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac, the 1972 Andes Plane Crash, and the legacy of Bonnie and Clyde. Here’s a snippet of the latter.
Yeah, then, all the most recent episodes are now hosted by Sarah Marshall.
We must note, alongside being very knowledgeable and super smart, Marshall has arguably THE BEST LAUGH IN PODCASTING HISTORY EVA! FACT! Very swoon worthy. 👍
Why do we like this podcast?! And why should YOU listen to it!?
- It’s informative.
- It’s well balanced.
- It’s fun.
- We did learn many a fascinating thing.
There are well over 100 episodes to listen to as a back catalogue and it’s never too late to get started. Curiosities await.
We think the key takeaway is seeing just how warped some topics can become. The passage of time, and Chinese whispers, alongside poor media coverage, can leave some topics clouded in falsities and nonsense.
It’s like if you watch Mel Gibson’s Braveheart (1995) and take it as fact.
Much more sensible an approach would be to watch the film, enjoy the bloodbath with fine Scottish accents, then go off and research the actual history of it all.
You can also find some of the full-length episodes on You’re Wrong About’s YouTube channel. Here discussing why mental illness should be taken seriously even if Norman Bates actor Anthony Perkins was a handsome SOB.
Episodes offer stimulating debate, very well researched information, thoughtful looks into often controversial subject matter, and many laughs along the way.
This is us offering double thumbs up to You’re Wrong About.
If you’ve got a smartphone you know what to do. Go to your podcast thingy, search for it, add it, and listen like a happy bunny. 👍
