For an undisclosed reason, cat beds have been plaguing our thoughts over the last week. You may wonder about this—why does a cat need a bed? Well, because they sleep a lot and we want to see a cat sleep in LUXURY. Total splendour.
Whilst we ended up getting a cut back, cute little number, some of the others on the feline market had us thinking about beds, pet furniture, and other such gubbins. Onward! 🐱
The Glorious Extravagance of Beds for Cats
Recently, we reviewed the artbook Cats in Art. Viewing all that lot, a species sometimes worshipped (the ancient Egyptians), other times vilified, through human history and it brings us to the present day.
Cats are worshipped online and you can buy a vast array of beds to suit their needs.
Some of this is humans projecting our desire to see cute cats in cute cat-based beds and swoon. For the feline, it’s a chance to chill the hell out in your own space and have a bit of a kip.
In our quest for a cat bed, we were determined to get one with a roof. The roof bit seems super important, ensure the cat feels enclosed and protected—no chance of anything swooping in to get at them. Plush, a plush base for comfort and restfulness.
Some people are going to total extremes with all this. That seems a logical step to us.
But the cat doesn’t give a toss about all that and will find somewhere it believes to be comfy for rest.
We found this video on how random IKEA objects, not intended as cat beds, are ending up being ideal pet furniture. It’s like those people who fork out £500 on a cat structure, only for the animal to have no interest in it and, instead, fall in love with sleeping in the bin.
It’s tempting to splash the hell out and get the very BEST and CUTEST cat bed available, but the way these animals are it seems a bit pointless.
Again, the projecting element of it—the little monster will sleep wherever it pleases. If that means cramming its frame down the side of the sofa, that’ll do it. So, we settled for a cut back little number and will see if the Beast of Bodmin takes to it.
The big surprise for us, really, was finding this booming cat bed market online. A seemingly endless choice—no limits! But that is the way of the cat. Whatever you buy, it may not like. Experimentation mode enabled.
Pet Furniture: Pushing Nature to EXTREMES!
In 2017, IKEA introduced the LURVIG range of pet furniture for cats and dogs. This is still available and the business explains the following.
“To understand what pets need, we need to think like them. That’s why we brought in pet-loving designers and trained veterinarians to help develop IKEA’s cat and dog home collection. The LURVIG range was created with our pets’ natural needs and behaviour as starting points …
For the dashing divas and Zen-like philosophers. For the endearing introverts and playful extroverts. Every pet has its own personality and needs.”
Some of these numbers are very stylish, as if dogs can tell you’ve splashed out and given them designer models and the like.
Yeah, so it’s all for human sensibilities. When buying these things, you’re largely doing it for yourself and your comfort. If the animal in question enjoys it to, then why the hell not?
We’ll report back on our bed of choice and if the land monster enjoys it.
We do wonder what these creatures genuinely think of them. We’ve seen some online resembling an igloo, with Pokémon toys for added fun. What does the feline think? “I live in an igloo and this toy expresses my love for Pokémon!” or “Comfort and slain beast I shall consume later!”? Probably the latter.
Still, it looks cute.

My parents would never have put up with this kind of nonsense but our childhood cat did love to sleep in a doll bed that my great-great-uncle made. Drove my mom batty.

They sleep where they want! Mine always slept in the bed with me…under the covers and hogging my pillow. Egads they’re cute!
