Here’s a wee indie gem from jumpsuit entertainment UG. It’s a “fungipunk” fantasy game with lots of puzzling and a pretty distinctive artistic style.
It’s another one of those quirky little indie titles we like to cover, so let’s dive on in and discover!
She Remembered Caterpillars
Released in early 2017, it was only on Steam for a while—but it’s on the Nintendo Switch as well now.
It’s a colour based puzzle game (and an adorable looking one at that) with a story that revolves around the concepts of love, loss, and holding on.
There’s a Samorost 3 aesthetic going on, we think, with the fantastical factor—plus, that warped and rather delightful soundtrack.
There’s a great deal of focus on making the game as strange as possible. Each level is a tiny world filled with gates and bridges.
These bridges can only be crossed by certain sprites, with each level ending with more details about the story.
There are 40 levels in all and, although it starts off easy enough, you’ll soon be left battling against the odds.
The dev team describe some of the levels as “nefarious” and they’re bloody well right.
The puzzles are logic-based, primarily, which is set alongside the organic visual style – the game feels alive.
But it’s an eccentric game and certainly not for everyone. Even describing the nature off the puzzles is difficult.
You just need a good concept of spatial awareness and the patience to send those little coloured sprites hopping towards victory.
It’s the type of game just by looking at you’ll know whether you want to add it to your collection.
It’s an insular world you enter, with vibrant colours and a sense of awe—and it that makes it weirdly relaxing. Plus, enjoyable (kind of the point of video games, eh?).
The developers even added options for colourblind people, which is rather thoughtful of them.
And, again, this is up and running on Steam if you fancy a go—there’s a free demo to pique your interest.
I really love this, love the sound track so much!
